Lecture summary.
On the typical Kanagawa original forest vegetation:
Now mostly existing on slopes and hills eg. around shrines saved from house planning.
The typical soil is a 3 meters thick sediment layer consisting of volcanic ashes from Mt Fuji and Hakone area.
Studying slope tree vegetation between two historical higher levels of the Tama river.
Celkowa trees prefer humid soil on slopes with underground moving water. Not still water or swamp!
Wasabi near spring. Prefers very clean water.
the drinking water was lead from here in a channel to Tokyo. (in Edo period)

Original Japanese design of dikes along Akigawa river.

Typical north slopes contain evergreen forest.
The wood of Hinoki is valuable for construction and furniture manufacturing because it is hard and durable.
Suki is suitable and second best. Probabaly due to more fast growing and therefore soft wood.
Momi is not so useful for other products than  for making coffins. Supposedly the wood is too soft for construction.

Katakuri prefers north slope humid soil. Cooler conditions (not above 25 degrees) The surface of the leaves is soft and cool. Slow growing cycle. A relict population is found here in a small area along the Akigawa river next to a
Chest-nut plantation.

Fir woods around shrine. Relict population. Many tall and big diameter firs.
